Just because the average work day is between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. doesn’t mean those are the hours in which you do your best work.

It seems like as young adults we all got a memo that multitasking was peak productivity. Turns out, it isn’t. In fact, recent studies suggest that attempting to multitask actually hinders your productivity.

Although switching back and forth between multiple tasks may seem quick, it takes longer because the mind can only focus on one activity at a time. As such, your brain works twice as hard to refocus on each task.

Ever had a conversation with a friend but then realized you didn’t register something they said because you got distracted? With multitasking, you may not realize it and you may make mistakes.

Your best bet is to focus your energy and attention on one task at a time. You’ll remove distractions and allow your mind to be more present.

You’ll find that giving yourself enough space leads to faster completion times and a higher quality work overall.

3. Be accountable.

Accountability can be a major productivity driver for both personal and professional goals. They often remind you of your “why” and serve as motivation to keep going.

At work, that accountability has to be self-enforcing, unless you have a coworker or a team you can depend on for it.

Being accountable looks like this:

  • I am setting a timer of 1 hour to complete some work.
  • Scheduling reminders.
  • Setting deadlines, even when your task or project doesn’t require one.

If you work from home, having an accountability partner can be especially helpful. Maybe your team can get together via Zoom on Monday for an hour, even if it’s in silence.

Or you can meet with your coworker once a week to give each other progress reports on upcoming projects.

Whether it’s personal or shared, accountability can greatly increase your productivity.

4. Break down big tasks.

Imagine you have a high-impact project due in a few weeks. Every time you think about it, you see the project as a whole and how far you are from perfection. This is a recipe for disaster.

To stay productive, it’s essential that you break down your tasks into smaller, actionable chunks. This will often reduce (or eliminate) work-related anxiety and enable you to stay motivated to reach important milestones.

5. Block your calendar.

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to get in the zone but getting interrupted by a last minute meeting or notification from the teams.

One way to protect your time is to block off your calendar during designated times to tackle your to-do list. This will create necessary boundaries to avoid interruptions as well as set expectations for your co-workers about when you will be available.

If they ping you in the meantime, don’t feel obligated to respond right away.

One way to avoid this is to keep your phone out of your workspace. If you are worried about missing calls, ring louder to hear your calls.

My productivity is at its lowest when I work outside of my normal routine.

This is because the mind knows only that which is familiar. From the time you wake up to the music you listen to at your desk, every step of your daily routine serves as cues for your behavior.

Therefore, when you fail to maintain a regular routine, it can be difficult to concentrate and be productive.

A routine might look like this:

  • Starting and ending work at the same time every day.
  • Having a designated work place.
  • Keep taking breaks every two hours.
  • Associating each working day with a set of tasks. E.g. Monday for meetings, Tuesday for writing, and Wednesday for analytics.
  • Listening to music while completing certain tasks.

3. Prioritize breaks.

Taking regular breaks is important to keep the productivity levels high at home.

In an office, breaks are embedded in the environment. You can stop to chat with co-workers or get up to grab a snack or coffee. At home, you have to structure your breaks or you risk burning yourself out.

Stepping away from your desk—even just for five minutes—acts as a reset, a brain refresher that will actually help you stay focused throughout the day.

Also, a break should not look like a food break. This may happen:

  • taking a walk
  • sit outside
  • do breathing exercises
  • to exercise
  • stretching
  • journaling

Unlike doom scrolling, these activities are supposed to be energy boosters that will help you stay productive during work hours.
